Old Glory Santa: 1863 USA
This character is inspired by the first interpretation of Santa Claus by political cartoonist Thomas Nast in 1863. It appeared as a pen and ink sketch in 'Harper's Weekly' magazine at Christmas time during the American Civil War. In the magazine illustration, this Santa, (for the Union cause), is depicted spreading Christmas cheer to the Federal soldiers. It also stirred the feelings of homecoming and family at Christmas time.
Due to the popularity of this santa, Mr. Nast was requested to produce more Santas for the magazine in following years. These new 'jolly old elf' characters were inspired by Clement Moore's poem, 'A Visit from St. Nick'.
